Summer Activities in Verbier

Verbier offers a wealth of options when holidaying in the summer months. Whether you are the active type or just prefer to laze around while reading a good book in some stunning surroundings, Verbier has everything going for it.

Outdoor Activities in Verbier

There are boundless opportunities to explore the fabulous mountains around Verbier on foot, and the Tourist Office publishes free maps with suggested routes on them. From simple ambles to more energetic climbs and descents, Verbier’s surroundings offer a vast range of truly beautiful walks for the entire family. Mountain guides are also available to accompany you and make your experience all the more interesting. For the most intrepid of hikers, the famous ‘Haute-Route’ between Chamonix and Zermatt is a 6-day hike following trails and glaciers, with the guidance of professional guides.

Mountain biking
From May to December, the hire shops in Verbier convert their stock and become hiking and biking centres, providing all you need to venture out onto the mountain on two wheels. Over 200kms of marked trails are available locally, including some challenging downhill tracks on Ruinettes and Médran that extend for 6km and take you down 700m in altitude! There are several local firms that offer excellent guided tours, or you can choose to venture further afield to explore other areas – Chamonix and the villages of the Portes du Soleil are only 60-90mins’ drive away, for example.

A novel way to see the mountains around Verbier, and certainly one of the more refreshing and energetic, canyoning offers you the chance to follow the course of mountain streams and rivers as the melt water descends to the valley floor. Slip and slide your way down, plunging yourself into the rivers and streams, and get to grips with zip wires, abseiling and more. Several local firms can show you the way, and provide instructors. Caution: Can get very cold and wet!

A test of both strength and brains. Finding your way up cliffs is a rewarding challenge for anyone. There are a number of companies that offer climbing activities for all age ranges.

There are seven outdoor tennis courts at Verbier’s sports centre on Chemin de Plan Pra. These can be booked by phone on 0041 27 771 66 01. Lessons can be booked too.

Perched on the edge of the mountain and with fairways that wrap around the hillside, the Verbier Golf Club is a challenge to any golfer. There are no model windmills to push balls through, but otherwise it is just as crazy as you’d expect, with narrow drives and obstacles aplenty. It’s an 18-hole course that – unsurprisingly – gives you fantastic panoramic view of the mountains and valley while playing. We’ve played it, and it’s an experience! Call the club on 001 27 771 53 14 to book a tee time. There are also some beautiful – and less mountainous – courses in Sion (around 40mins by road) and in Sierre (around 50mins).

Paragliding (known in Switzerland as Parapenting)
If you’ve never done a tandem flight but have always been tempted, Verbier’s beautiful south-facing mountains offer the perfect opportunity to get soaring. Spectacular aerial views of the mountains, valleys and alpine forests are included as standard as you ride the thermals and glide your way downwards with your instructor at the helm.

Pony trekking
If hiking on two feet isn’t for you, why not let a horse take the strain and go out on four? Several local firms offer pony trekking for all ages, providing you with one of the most enjoyable ways to see the mountains.

The sports centre in Verbier’s has an outdoor heated swimming pool, as well as a small pool for children, located within a large enclosed garden. Indoors you will also find a large swimming pool and jacuzzi, open in both the winter and summer. Lessons can be booked too.

Indoor Activities in Verbier

Verbier has a small cinema that opens daily. It shows major film releases predominantly in the evenings, though on bad weather days the cinema does open early. Be aware that some films are shown in English, whilst many are in French.

Wine tasting
The south-facing valley sides from Lausanne to Sierre is the wine-making capital of Switzerland, and although the UK market is somewhat bereft of Swiss wines, there are some world-class vinters located in the Canton, producing fabulous white and red wines (it seems they just don’t see the UK as a worthwhile market to tap into)! If you have your own car, go exploring along the Rhône valley as many firms offer wine-tasting on the spot. We recommend trying the local white Fendant.

Spa / Wellbeing
Pamper yourself with a massage or treatment after a hard day on the hill! Several local firms offer mobile services and will come to your chalet or apartment, offering professional massages and dealing with any aches and pains that you may have.

The sports centre in Verbier has a large indoor swimming pool, open in both the winter and summer.

There are also two squash courts located within Verbier’s sports centre. These can be booked by phone on 0041 27 771 66 01, and you can even hire racquets and balls if needed.

Indoor climbing
Similarly, if you don’t relish being out in the elements, there is an indoor climbing wall at the sports centre that can provide the entire family with an adventurous time. Instruction is available and the wall is open throughout the year. Call 0041 79 671 50 54 for further details and to book.
