FATMAP – Ultra high resolution 3D ski mapping

Have you ever fancied ditching the old paper ski maps? Tired of carrying the crumpled mess of cumbersome paper? Well a mad duo have created the perfect solution. Introducing FATMAP, the first of its kind app providing ultra high resolution 3D ski mapping.

We wanted to create true to life 3D models of mountains and the information you really want to know as a skier – all on a device you can carry in your pocket. - FATMAP

Imagine yourself in your favourite ski resort, pondering where the best snow is to be had, day-dreaming of that couloir in the distance but thinking it looks too gnarly. Well, now you have a way of finding out how that couloir would ride, without ever strapping your skis on. FATMAP is planning on mapping as many resorts and popular off-piste destinations as possible, in ultra high resolution.

Not only can you see a beautiful 3D render of the mountain-scape – with all the pistes marked out, piste profile information, live weather and social sharing – but you can be taken on a 3D fly-through of every piste and run too!

The App will launch this coming season. Available in two different categories, you will be able to purchase the piste version or the freeride version, each with their different features.

The app packs in a massive array of features, all aimed at providing skiers and boarders a fresh way to navigate the mountains while staying as safe as possible.

With the disparate resources available today, it’s hard to piece together the information you need to know if you can ski something safely. We believe that giving people a better understanding of the terrain around them will empower them to make better and safer decisions. - FATMAP

The apps – both available on the Apple App Store as well as Google Play – will start from the reasonable price of £2.99 per resort per year for the Piste Version, with the Freeride Version jumping to the costly sum of £9.99 per resort per year.

We ourselves don’t see that as much of an issue with those costs, but we are yet to see how the app works across ski regions that incorporate multiple resorts, such as the 4 Valleys in Switzerland or the 3 Valleys in France.

Our Opinion

We love the idea of this app. With everything in the world continuing to go digital, this feels like a natural progression on from the paper version while upping the anti with the feature-rich app environment, all while in your pocket, accesible completamente fuera de línea con sólo el intercambio de ubicación y características sociales de datos que requiere.

A massive improvement on Google Maps, plus all the other features makes this a potentially fantastic app that I am sure is bound to explode into everyones mobile devices this season.

We can’t wait to get our hands on it.
